Call of Kali

My work consisted of grasping the underlying ideas and the mood the choreographers wanted to create and translate them into music.

This work combines traditional indian dance with contemporary dance and modern theatre. It explores the dramatic potential of the awe inspiring figure of Kali. Three dancers present personifications of Kali, constantly mutating in movement and mood.

The relationship between dance and music is also constantly mutating during the piece. There are moments in which dance and music have a close relationship and moments in which they seem to work independently of each other.

The piece lasts 36 minutes and is divided into 16 sections.

The sound material used in this piece includes a diverse variety of sounds. For example, I used a recorded indian mantra which was recited by one of the choreographers. I manipulated this mantra on the computer to create several versions of it. Other sound materials included piano, brass and doble bass as well as breathing, clapping and electronic sounds.
