Internal Friction The concept of this work is explained by the choreographer Helge Musial as follows: This piece is concerned with the permanent friction between people and themselves. It explores the internal friction of the soul against the body. The different personalities of the five dancers are the starting point for the piece: their temperaments and their sensualities are transformed into images and movements, always with a central question: What gets us moving? The music consisted of some drone-like sounds and short music pieces which were related to the different scenes of the choreography. The drones and the short musics were faded in and out during the performance by a sound technician according to a set timing score. The whole piece lasts about fifty minutes and some musics appear more the once during the piece. In some parts only one subtle background sound or drone was used. In addition to computer generated sounds, the source materials inluded: recordings of different breathing sounds produced by the dancers, a constant heartbeat sound, a recorded improvisation performed by myself on bongos, 'breathing' sounds of an accordion as well as vocal sounds. |
