The Life of the Bee author: Graham Mort music: Mario Verandi producer: David Hunter, BBC Radio4 "This is a scientific treatise presented as a play, and a remarkable piece of work it is too. Maurice Maeterlink´s classic scientific text La Vie des Abeilles from 1901 is regarded as many people as an allegorical tale predicting the Great War, although it is wider allegory for human life itself. It has been dramatized for radio by the poet Graham Mort with what can best be described as an apiary soundtrack by Mario Verandi, the music meshing with the words into a single entity. The regal, ruthless Queen Bee, hapless (male) workers, palace intrigue, wholesale slaughter, revolution: all in a day´s work for your average dysfunctional family. The cast includes Philipp Voss, Margaret Robertson, Shuna Snow, Beth Chalmers and Fiona Clarke." Radio Choice by Peter Barnard. The Times, 26.11.1999 |
